NASA Astronaut and Professor at Columbia University
A former NASA astronaut, Mike is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University and Senior Advisor for Space Programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. He is also the first person ever to Tweet from space. Mike received a B.S. from Columbia and an M.S. in both Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Policy, as well as a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After working at IBM, NASA, and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, Mike was selected as an astronaut in 1996. A veteran of two space flights, his accomplishments include a team record for the number of hours spacewalking in a single space shuttle mission.
Mike shares stories of inspiration drawn from his out-of-this-world experiences. Using humor and storytelling, he highlights the pursuit of his childhood dream, the teamwork needed to train for difficult space missions, the determination needed to evaluate risk and manage through crises, and the leadership needed to overcome challenges in space and beyond.
